Chapter Eleven

They walked out into the lobby, signed out on the visitor’s log, and walked outside. Wyatt said, “He’s still the same Lucius, isn’t he? Despite having this other side to him.”

“Just as pleasant as ever,” agreed Beatrice. “We could have been in there discussing books and he’d have had the same manner. I don’t think that part of him is a sham at all. After all, he has nothing to gain by being nice to us now.”

Wyatt nodded. “What do you make of what he was saying about Felton?”

“It sounds as if he was supremely well-qualified to be able to see through her. After all, he’s built up his own persona. And he apparently has an expertise when it comes to jewelry. I’m definitely surprised that Felton wasn’t who she said she was, but I’m not quite as shocked as I thought I’d be.”

“Why is that?” asked Wyatt.

“Maybe because she just went on and on about her background and her money. Most people who come from that type of life don’t usually harp on it, do they? Maybe, on some level, I realized she wasn’t everything she appeared.”

“And Rupert?” asked Wyatt.

“Maybe Rupert is capable of more than we thought. I’m not saying he’s responsible, but he must have been furious at the way his mother was treating him. Maybe it’s as Lucius said: he’d finally had enough one day.”

They got into the car and headed from downtown to home. Beatrice frowned, staring out the passenger window. “Wait—are those emergency vehicles over at Felton’s again?”

Wyatt slowed down. “No, I think they’re at Rupert’s.”

“Should we go there?” asked Beatrice.

Wyatt nodded. “Let’s just check and see if Rupert needs help. With his mother gone, he doesn’t really have anyone in town to rely on.”

Wyatt carefully pulled the car off the street and out of the way of the police cars and ambulance. There looked to be state police there, too.

Beatrice frowned at the scene as they got out of the car. “This doesn’t look good.”

Wyatt said, “Ramsay’s coming over to talk to us.”

Ramsay had spotted them and was swiftly walking over, a grim look on his face. “Were you here to speak with Rupert?”

Wyatt shook his head. “Only when we saw all the cars. We thought we should check up on him.”

Ramsay blew out a sigh. “I’m afraid there’s no need to check in at this point. He’s gone. Murdered at what appears to be sometime earlier today. I’d run by to talk to him about his mom and found him dead.”

Beatrice and Wyatt stared at him.

“Have you been in touch with him recently?” asked Ramsay.

“We visited him yesterday,” said Wyatt. “Beatrice and I brought over food and we spoke about his mother’s service for a little while.”

“Did he mention anything else? Any worries? Anything on his mind? Any thoughts about what may have happened to his mother?”

Beatrice said, “He opened up in some ways, but didn’t tell us about feeling threatened in any way. He wasn’t happy about being back home, of course, or getting assistance from his mom.
